Gumleaf - Bookend Veneers

$50.00

Inspired by nature, this design is traced from a leaf that fell from one of the massive eucalyptus or 'gum' trees in our back yard. Only timbers with highly contrasting linear features along the grain -such as Blackheart Sassafras, Flame Myrtle, Musk or Leatherwood- are used. These veneers represent the pinnate veins running from the midrib (central vein) to the outer leaf edge, like a feather. Furthermore, the left and right sides of each leaf are selected from neighbouring slices of the same milled tree so that they can be mirrored (as closely as is possible along a wavy line!). Two veneers reflecting each other in this way is called 'bookend' in timber work. Finally, a 1mm x 0.7mm hand-whittled strip in contrasting timber is embedded between them as the midrib.
The result? A truly unique and understated piece.
